Corporeal: A Night of Drawing from the Human Figure

Fig 1. The Golden Ratio (Corporeal flyer front by The Entente)

Each year, as part of the Brighton White Night festival we run a drawing event where we seek to push the boundaries of our figure drawing classes, in 2009 we ran ‘Drawn from the Deck’ at Komedia, in 2010 The Cabinets of Wonder rolled out for ‘Enlightenment’ and this year we bring you ‘Corporeal: A Night of Drawing from the Human Figure’.

About Corporeal
This year White Night is themed around Utopias, so we are creating our own utopia; a huge, free figure drawing class where the empathetic experience of figure drawing is opened up to all, regardless of drawing ability or level of experience. Held in the vaulted interior of St Paul’s church and running until 4am in the morning it will become an oasis of intense and contemplative observation.

A dozen costumed models draped in white will take it in turns to pose for drawings throughout the night, accompanied by a live score of music written especially for the evening. Models will be set throughout the space; those drawing will be free to move around, to draw models, the interior of the church and anything that engages the eye.

As always with these White Night Drawing events, you can just turn up and draw at any time, and leave when you like.

Why St Paul’s Church?
Last year we took over Friends Meeting House in the Lanes and we were amazed at what an oasis of calm it became in the dynamic creative chaos of White Night. So this year, with our utopian theme in mind we sought out a space that could magnify the sense of wonder in drawing a fellow human being. A space of quiet and intense contemplation that imbues a life drawing class with its meditative otherness.

Rather than set our White Night drawing in a well kitted out theater space with ample seats and dramatic lighting we wanted to find a beautiful space who’s stones had been worn with a history of deep and thoughtful silence, where the scribble of pencil on our paper might scratch hymns to the human figure. So where better to set our utopian drawing class than in vaulted interior of St Paul’s church?

Thanks you to the church warden John Burdett and Reverend Fayers for their ongoing support.

What is White Night?
Each year the Brighton White Night festival invites everybody to join the artists, creators and do-ers of the city to reclaim Saturday evenings and do something different in the middle of the night. White Night is a massive stimulus for original creative work and creates 14 new commissions, running alongside 50 other major events in the city; it runs all night from 6pm-6am and is free to all. It is one of the single most exciting nights of the year. To see more White Night events click here.

What is the Big Draw?
The Big Draw is a month long, UK-wide fstival of drawing that encompases thousands of drawing events. Run by the Campaign for Drawing its aim is to invite people of all ages to discover how drawing can connect them with their surroundings and the wider community. Last year we were awarded a Drawing Inspiration award for our 2010 event Enlightenment. This year, through the Big Draw, we have been generously sponsored by Moleskine who are kindly donating sketchbooks to be selectively handed out at our event. More on this in a later post…to read more about the Big Draw click here.
