Survey Results

Thank you to everyone that filled in our life drawing survey last month. We gathered some really useful information from it and have used that information to make changes to our program so that it better suits everyone’s needs and wants. There will be future posts outlining these changes and I will publish the results in a separate post.

For the moment I would like to announce that Hilary Gibson is the lucky winner of a gift pack and three life drawing gift vouchers, she was randomly selected from everyone that filled in the survey and entered their email address for the draw.

Art Shops

image

For such a creative town Brighton is lacking a really good, central art materials supplies shop. With this in mind we now have a little art shop in the studio, where you can stock up on drawing basics, during or after life drawing sessions. You can click here to see our prices (or go to the Art Shop link above).

image

We’re only stocking the basics at the moment, so if you’re looking for something a little more specialist hop on a bus, or take the train to Aldrington station and visits T.N.Lawrence Art Shop in Hove (208 Portland Road). They are the most comprehensive art suppliers in Brighton and stock an excellent range of every conceivable art material in most major brands (artist and student quality).

If you’re needing something in the middle of Brighton Clarkes Stationers on Bond Street can be handy, they don’t have the widest range of materials, their prices are pretty high and the staff aren’t as knowledgeable as at Lawrence’s but they have a good range of paper, and needs must!

Alternatively, if you’re coming from the deepest depths of West Sussex always make time for a trip to Seawhite in Partridge Green, a major national supplier they are the supplier for our little art shop and have their own factory shop where plenty of excellent deals are to be had.

Thursday Themed Sessions

Tonight’s (Thursday 11th) Life Drawing session is another of our weekly Themed sessions.

A themed life drawing sessions is like a regular 2.5 hour session (a mixture of short, medium and long nude poses) but with the extra twist of themed set and music that compliment the poses. Session may sometimes include costumed or semi-costumed poses and multiple models and themes can vary from colour themes (we have had recent Red and Blue sets) to literary themes (Red Riding Hood, Goblin Market) to all sorts of more experimental themes.

The sessions are a chance to draw poses you wouldnt normaly see at regualr sessions and give a new edge to drawings, encouraging flights of fancy and creative additions to your work. They can also be treated like a straight forward life class, it depends on your mood.

Sometimes we will have a guest designer like in the session photographed above,  designed by Flossie Pettit. Lucy Luella has been co-designing many of the recent sessions. Tonight we will have a playing card themed session designed by Laura Burgess; Laura makes card inspired jewelry which may feature in the poses (see here). Afterwards we’ll be going for a game of cards at the Cobblers Thumb on New England Street…

Volunteers Update

As the summer rolls and storms rage in the Brighton skies my mind turns to Autumn and the potential wonders of White Night, the Big Draw and a scaled up version of the Drawing Circus…

To make all of our drawing events a reality I must once again call on the talents of the Brighton drawing community to come and help out with preparations, so without further ado I shall issue a  call for Volunteers! We need set-builders, stage crew, models, organisers and facilitators to come help with a plethora of tasks for White Night, the Big Draw, Drawing Circus, Themed drawing sessions and The Cabinet of Wonders events. From this week onwards we will also be starting Volunteer Fridays, a weekly, sociable evening in the studio where volunteers can come to lend a hand with preparations of all kinds.

The Common Academy of Art

image

This Friday we’ll be off to Shoreham to run a daytime costumed figure drawing workshop and an evening life drawing session for free in Shoreham for the lovely people at The Common Academy of Art. There are a whole host of activities going on there from Thursday onwards for all ages and abilities, so I recommend getting on down that way!
